A Microsoft Word add-in for Agreement Desk that analyses agreements against playbook rules, answers questions about the agreement in chat, generates and substitutes contract language, and, when a user explicitly applies a suggestion, writes markup into the open Word document; documents opened from Agreement Desk can be saved back as a new version.

Docusign documents AI-Assisted Review as a Microsoft Word add-in for Agreement Desk that enables contract clause corrections, suggestions and markup. A user opens an agreement either from Agreement Desk (Requests > Documents > Edit in Word, or Open in Microsoft Word for the web), from local storage, or in the Agreement Desk document preview, then signs in to the add-in. Playbooks are collections of plain-language rules; the user selects a playbook and chooses Run All (or runs individual rules) and the add-in analyses the contract and returns per-rule results with statuses Needs Review, Passed, Not Run, Failed and Resolved, together with reasoning, comments and suggested markup shown as strikethroughs and bolded replacement terms. The user resolves a result, applies a single suggestion with Apply, or applies everything with Apply All or Apply All Suggestions and Comments. A Chat tab answers questions about the agreement, summarises it, analyses terms, suggests edits and drafts new language; chat suggestions are inserted only when the user selects Apply Suggestion, and each affected section must be applied individually. A Clauses tab can insert or substitute language from the IAM Clause Library at the user cursor or over selected text. Playbooks can be created manually (Add Rule, Refine with AI, Test Rule) or generated by the add-in from a single uploaded DOCX or PDF reference document using its first 100 pages, after which the generated title, description and rules are editable and must be saved by the user.
Data access
Docusign documents the add-in working on the agreement the user has open in Microsoft Word, plus documents opened from an Agreement Desk request. Playbook rules and the IAM Clause Library (or the Docusign CLM Clause Library in the CLM version) supply the approved language used for suggestions. Playbook generation uploads a user-selected reference document to Docusign AI-Assisted Review and uses its first 100 pages. Chat can be pointed at a highlighted clause via Add source > Use current text selection, and agreement summaries can be steered with saved summary instructions and shortcuts that are available to all users with access to the add-in. Documents saved from an Agreement Desk session are written back to Agreement Desk as a new version; documents opened from local storage are saved locally and must be uploaded manually. The documentation reviewed does not describe access to other Docusign records, external systems or account-wide data outside the open agreement, playbooks and the clause library.

Docusign documents these controls: the add-in must be installed, either by individual users from Microsoft Marketplace or centrally by administrators through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center for selected users and groups. An account administrator assigns playbook permissions to users or groups in Admin > Users & Groups > Actions > Manage Playbook Access, choosing Can Manage Playbooks (create, view, edit, run, delete playbooks and rules, plus Chat), Can View Playbooks (view and run playbooks and rules, plus Chat) or None (cannot use AI-Assisted Review features). Users must have a full IAM license to manage or view playbooks. By default Global Request Managers have View and Admins have Manage playbook permissions, and request editors can be granted View or Manage by a Global Request Manager or Admin. Docusign administrators can set which languages are enabled for users. Playbooks themselves are administrative controls: rules can be created, refined with AI, tested, edited, re-ordered, deleted, exported and imported.

Docusign documents AI-Assisted Review for Agreement Desk as generally available functionality; the Agreement Desk overview page was last updated Jul 28, 2026 and the review and clause-library articles Jul 22 and Aug 21, 2026. Agreement Desk is available in IAM Professional, IAM for Enterprise, IAM Platform and IAM for Sales. The full set of AI-Assisted Review capabilities is available with Agreement Desk in the Enterprise and Sales plans; with IAM Professional it includes a simple save experience for edits in Microsoft Word and an AI contract review assistant. Chat is documented as available on IAM for Enterprise, IAM Platform, IAM for Sales and IAM Professional. A separate Docusign CLM AI-Assisted Review add-in is available to Docusign CLM, CLM+ and Docusign with AI Extensions customers and is not available to CLM Essentials or IL-4 customers. One Docusign concept page still states availability on IAM for Enterprise and IAM for Sales only, so plan coverage statements differ between current Docusign pages.
Licensing
Playbook permissions are included with Agreement Desk Enterprise and Sales plans only, and a full IAM license is required to manage or view playbooks. Managed installations of the add-in require a license of Office that includes Exchange and Office 365 for Desktop. Docusign states there may be future limits or throttling of usage to maintain platform stability and performance.
External model or provider
Not established. The current Docusign pages reviewed do not identify an underlying model provider, model family or model version for AI-Assisted Review, and document no model-selection control. Docusign pages for an Iris model brand and a trust AI page were not reachable at the URLs checked on 2026-09-21.
Limitations and uncertainty
AI-Assisted Review works only with DOCX files; macros and content controls are not supported and may cause errors. Playbook generation accepts DOCX and PDF, uses a single document and only its first 100 pages. AI-powered review supports English, French, German, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, with the add-in interface in the 14 Docusign languages (seven for the CLM version). For the Agreement Desk add-in, Docusign support states mobile, web and tablet versions of Microsoft Word are not supported, while the review procedures describe using the add-in in Microsoft Word for the web, so current Docusign pages are inconsistent on web support. Desktop requirements are Office on Windows build 16.0.16130+ with an active Microsoft 365 subscription, Office 2021 or later on Windows, Office on Mac build 16.70+ with an active Microsoft 365 subscription, or Office 2019 or later on Mac. Users reauthenticate every 30 days. Analysis time varies with contract and playbook size. Not established from the sources reviewed: whether AI-Assisted Review is ever invoked without a user opening the add-in, any immutable audit log of AI suggestions, any retention or AI training statement for uploaded agreements, and the identity of the model provider. No evidence was found of the add-in writing to systems outside the open Word document and the originating Agreement Desk request.
