AI Blocks
Reusable AI action blocks that read board, file and document content and write generated, classified or extracted results back into monday.com columns and documents, usable in AI-powered columns, board automations and the AI workflow builder.
Recorded characteristics
- Function
- monday.com documents AI blocks as the central AI building blocks across the platform, usable in AI-powered columns, automations and the workflow builder. The documented blocks are Assign labels, Summarize text, Improve text, Detect a sentiment, Translate text, Writing assistant, Extract information, Generate docs, Custom block, and Custom block with the web search feature. A block reads designated board content, files or documents, and writes its result into monday.com: Assign labels selects and applies a label to a status or dropdown column, Writing assistant and Improve text, Summarize, Translate, Detect sentiment and Custom block populate a chosen column, Extract information writes extracted details into board columns, Generate docs creates a generated document from board information, and Assign person populates a People column. Configuration shows a prompt preview before the user clicks Save & apply.
- Data access
- Documented inputs are board columns that support AI actions (Text, Date, Number, Dropdown, People and Status columns; Formula columns are read-only and cannot trigger AI actions or receive AI results), and for Extract information: files such as invoices, resumes or contracts in .pdf, .png, .jpg, .jpeg, .webp, .docx, .xlsx and .pptx format up to 15MB, webpage content via the Link column, text columns, monday docs uploaded into a Files column (not the Docs column) and images, with a 250,000 character limit. Custom block supports files up to 5MB as input. The custom block web search feature retrieves publicly available information from the web, and monday.com states certain queries may be shared with third-party search providers. AI columns on subitems cannot access files stored on the parent item.
- Actions
- Can take actions
- External actions
- Unknown
- Human confirmation
- Conditional
- Permission basis
- Not established
- Administrative control
- Account admins enable or disable AI for the account through Administration, either under Customization then Features (Enable or disable AI features) or through AI governance then AI permissions, where monday.com states the Enable AI features toggle is available on all plans. On the Enterprise plan the AI permissions tab lets admins allow individual AI features and agent types for selected account roles. AI governance also provides credit usage monitoring per feature and per user, account-wide, per-feature (hard or soft) and per-user credit limit policies, an agent directory and a Vibe apps tab. At board level, a user configures a block on a column and can deactivate it from the column three-dot menu under AI-powered actions, which also removes the associated locked automations from the board's Autopilot hub; those automations cannot be removed from the hub directly. Run history in the Autopilot hub records AI actions and failures. monday.com states accounts can ask their account manager or support to turn off the web search option.
- Default state
- Not established
- Availability
- monday.com states AI-powered columns are available on Pro and Enterprise plans and usable by users whose admins have enabled AI capabilities. AI workflows are available on the monday AI work platform to Standard accounts limited to 3 active workflows, Pro up to 20 and Enterprise up to 250, and require Pro or Enterprise on monday CRM, monday service or monday dev. The AI Credits article states it applies to the monday AI work platform only and does not affect monday CRM, dev or service.
- Licensing
- Use of AI blocks consumes AI credits: monday.com states that triggering an action uses eight credits, and that all actions carried out on the same item within a 24-hour period are counted once, with items and subitems treated as separate entities. Credit limits trigger notifications at 80% and 100% of usage, after which some AI capabilities continue for a short period before usage may be paused; admins can purchase more credits from the Credits Usage tab of AI governance.
- External model or provider
- monday.com describes monday AI generally as powered by leading AI models without naming a model or provider for AI blocks. For the custom block web search feature monday.com states the web search functionality is powered by Tavily Inc., a third party providing web search capabilities.
- Limitations and uncertainty
- monday.com's documentation establishes that a block writes its output into monday.com board columns or generated documents, but does not describe AI blocks performing state changes in external systems, so external action capability is recorded as unknown rather than no. Human confirmation is recorded as conditional: configuring a block shows a prompt preview and requires the user to click Save & apply, while monday.com states an activated AI column runs through locked background automations that keep running until AI is deactivated on the column, and blocks can be placed in automations and published workflows; monday.com does not document a per-execution approval step for those subsequent runs, nor does it affirmatively state that none exists. The runtime identity used when a block reads board data or writes a result is not documented, so permission basis is not established; account-level enablement and Enterprise role permissions govern access rather than runtime identity. The operational default is likewise not established: monday.com states users can use AI capabilities only where admins have enabled them, but does not state the position of the Enable AI features toggle for a new account. Actions performed by later automation or workflow steps after a block produces its output are not attributed to the block.
